How to compare plug-in solar kits without getting distracted by watts

Use a like-for-like checklist covering the model, inverter, mounting, delivery, warranty and total price before choosing a kit.
The short answer
Quick answer
Compare the exact device and its compliance evidence, panel and inverter ratings, what the box includes, mounting requirements, delivery, VAT, warranty and returns. Only then compare the price and any estimated savings.
Compare the exact product, not just the headline
Two listings can use similar photos or watt figures while describing different panels, inverters, frames or included accessories. Record each full model and SKU, then compare the specification sheets side by side.
- Panel quantity and rated power for each panel.
- Inverter model, output rating and monitoring features.
- Full device identifier and the current compliance evidence for that model.
Make the kit contents and installation needs visible
Mounting is part of the decision. A garden frame, balcony arrangement and wall-mounted option have different space, fixing and permission considerations. Check what the product includes and what you must source separately.
- Frame, feet, brackets, fixings and any required ballast.
- Cable lengths, plug details and the route to the socket.
- Weight, dimensions, storage and safe access for delivery.
Compare the price on the same basis
Use the price a household will actually pay, with VAT and delivery stated clearly. If you are buying as a reseller, keep your ex-VAT cost separate from the customer-facing price and include payment fees, customer service, returns and other costs in your margin calculation.
A suggested retail price is a supplier reference, not proof that the product is competitively priced. Check current alternatives and explain what is different about the product you recommend.
Review support and after-sales terms
Before recommending or selling a kit, make sure you can explain who handles delivery issues, faults, returns and warranty claims. Product availability and specifications can change, so date-check the seller’s information before publishing a recommendation.
Quick answers
Common questions
Is a higher watt rating always the better buy?
No. Compare the full system, including the inverter, mounting, suitability, included parts, compliance evidence and delivered price. A higher rating by itself does not establish better value.
Should I compare supplier buy price with the suggested retail price?
Use it only as an initial margin check. Confirm VAT treatment, delivery, what is included and your own costs, then compare against current alternatives before setting a customer price.
What should an affiliate product recommendation disclose?
Clearly explain when a link is an advertisement or may earn commission, close to the recommendation. Also describe the basis of the recommendation and any material limitations.
