The short answer

Quick answer

A panel’s watt rating describes rated power under specified conditions, not a guaranteed daily or annual amount. Estimate generation using the full system, location, orientation, shade, season and a reputable tool or installer assessment.

Separate rated power from generated energy

A rating in watts is not the same as energy produced over a day. Energy is commonly shown in kilowatt-hours, and actual output varies as sunlight and temperature change.

Use the inverter limit and system configuration as well as the panel rating. The number printed on a panel cannot by itself tell you what will reach your home or reduce your bill.

Use assumptions that match your site

  • Use your location and panel direction rather than a national average alone.
  • Account for shade, tilt, orientation, seasonal variation and inverter limits.
  • For savings, estimate how much generation you can use at the time it is produced.
  • Keep the assumptions with the estimate and label it as an estimate, not a guarantee.

Quick answers

Common questions

Can I multiply panel watts by 24 hours to estimate daily solar?

No. That assumes the panel operates at its rated power all day and night. Solar output changes with daylight and conditions.

What is a better source for a rooftop estimate?

Use an established solar assessment tool or a site-specific installer estimate, and check the assumptions about location, direction, shade and system design.
