Solar panel mounting options for gardens, walls and balconies

Compare mounting location, fixing method, wind exposure, permissions, access and the exact manufacturer instructions.
The short answer
Quick answer
Choose a mounting system designed for the panel and location, and obtain permission for shared or rented property. The frame must be securely installed for its wind and surface conditions; avoid improvised weights, fixings or balcony attachments.
Match the mount to the surface
Garden frames, roof rails, wall brackets and balcony mounts place different loads on their supporting surfaces. Read the system instructions for compatible panel dimensions, fixing points, ground conditions, ballast and wind limitations.
Do not attach a panel to a railing, roof or wall unless the structure owner permits it and the mounting documentation supports that installation. An installer can assess structural issues that cannot be decided from a product photo.
Check the environment and maintenance access
- Consider wind exposure, water drainage, corrosion, shade and nearby footpaths.
- Keep doors, fire escapes, access paths and equipment clear.
- Use only listed mounting hardware and the specified fixings.
- Plan a safe way to inspect or clean panels without climbing or leaning over an edge.
Quick answers
Common questions
Can I use paving slabs as ballast?
Only if the product instructions specify a tested ballast arrangement for that model and site. Do not improvise weights or exceed surface limits.
Can a balcony mount be used in a garden?
Only if the manufacturer supports that mounting arrangement. Confirm compatibility, fixing and wind conditions for the specific location.
