The short answer

Quick answer

A useful payback estimate compares the full installed cost with realistic yearly bill savings and export income, then states the assumptions and exclusions. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed return, and should be updated when tariffs or system details change.

Start with the real cost and expected generation

Use a written quote that states the system, installation work, VAT and any additional equipment. For generation, use a site-specific estimate with location, direction, shading and system design stated.

Separate electricity used in the home from electricity exported. They can have different values, and the amount used directly depends on generation and household timing.

Show the assumptions and limitations

  • State the electricity import price and export tariff used, plus the date checked.
  • Include battery cost and replacement assumptions if storage is part of the quote.
  • Account for maintenance, warranty limits, financing and other relevant costs.
  • Show a cautious, central and optimistic scenario rather than one precise promise.
  • Do not describe a simple cost-divided-by-saving result as a guaranteed payback date.

Quick answers

Common questions

Can a solar calculator guarantee when I will break even?

No. Generation, tariffs, export payments, household use, equipment and future costs can change. Treat the result as a scenario estimate.

Should exported electricity be valued at my import rate?

Not automatically. Export compensation depends on your contract and eligibility. Check the current tariff terms and show the import and export values separately.
