Solar panels generate when there is light; stored energy or grid electricity can meet demand after generation falls.

The short answer

Quick answer

Solar panels do not generate ordinary daytime PV electricity after sunset. You can use solar energy later if a compatible battery stored it, or use grid electricity as usual; storage has capacity and conversion limits.

Generation and storage are separate

Panels produce electricity when light reaches them, with output varying by conditions. A battery can store some surplus for later, but a system without storage cannot shift daytime solar to night-time use.

In a home with a battery, controls decide when to charge or discharge. Settings, battery reserve, weather, household demand and tariff rules can affect what energy is available after sunset.

Check what the system can actually power

Ask whether the battery is intended for bill optimisation, backup, or both. Backup operation may need dedicated equipment and may supply only selected circuits; it should not be assumed from the presence of a battery.

For a plug-in solar product, verify whether storage is supported for the exact model. Do not improvise a connection between a panel kit and a separate battery.

Quick answers

Common questions

Will a battery cover all my evening electricity?

Not necessarily. It depends on stored energy, battery capacity and power, system settings and your evening demand.

Can I use solar during a power cut?

Many grid-connected systems shut down during an outage unless specifically designed with suitable backup equipment. Confirm the exact system behaviour with its installer or manufacturer.
